Top 5 tips for getting started on Instagram

Here are our top tips to help auctioneers get started on Instagram.

1. Set up your account correctly

To make the most of the platform, upgrade to a business profile account. You’ll be able to add a website link and location address to your profile, as well as run adverts.

Creating an account can be done at www.instagram.com or via their app. To convert your account into a business account, follow these steps.

2. Get on-brand and use highlights

Make your page as ‘on-brand’ as possible by using your company logo and company name so people can easily identify you and your posts.

Highlighted posts are a great way to showcase your auction house, either with an introductory message, call for consignments or promoting upcoming auctions. These appear prominently on your company page.

3. Make your profile easier to find

More and more people use Instagram’s search to find interests and new pages to follow. Add keywords like auctions, antiques and valuations into your page description to make it easier for people to find you.

4. Make a content plan

It’s important to post a variety of content so your feed isn’t one-dimensional. To get the mix right and make regular posting easier, prepare a schedule and set aside time to publish posts.

Content can be items you already put together for your website, newsletter or other social accounts. Just edit it to suit Instagram, in particular making sure the image looks great.

Your Instagram feed should define what you do at a glance, so feature posts that showcase what you do. For example:

  • Examples of lots
  • Upcoming auctions
  • Expert knowledge
  • Valuations days/events
  • Services you offer

Start small with just a couple of posts each week, and use the insights from each post to learn what gets the most engagement from your audience. Then you can expand your schedule and post more often.

5. Make connections

Social media is all about connections. Images showing and tagging people tend to be more popular with audiences. When making your content plan, factor this in. For example:

  • Valuation events photos
  • Lot insight videos from experts
  • Behind the scenes on auction sale day
